I posted this on my old blog last year. It’s such good information on storing fabric that I want to share it again. Fat eighths seem to be the most difficult to store since they are small pieces of fabric.
I organize fabric by size and color and keep these in separate bins. I have shared that with you in the past, but here’s a photo of some of those bins:
Well,ย this is mostly successful, but I have found that storing fat eighths or eighth yards in these bins posed a unique problem. They are small, so as they are placed in the bin, some of them will start to disappear under others. So, eventually, the bin becomes hard to search through. In the photo below, see how some of the folded fat eighths are slipping under others?
So I came up with a solution …. roll the fat eights and secure them with a rubber band. That way, I can store them all in a bin and they would be easier to sort through without making a mess! Here’s how they look when they’re rolled:
Here’s how to roll them:
First fold the fat over once, then over again (see photos)
Now, from the bottom, start to roll it up.
As you get to the end, fold over the opposite end:
Now, fold the rolled portion and the folded end in as shown so the raw edge is inside:
Finally, using small rubber bands, rubber band the fat eighth to secure it:
Here’s the rubber bands I use:
Now here is how I store them:
So now that you’ve seen my storage solutions, share yours with by commenting below. You will be entered in a drawing to win a signed copy of my book!
I will choose the winner next Thursday.ย **We have a winner! Congrats, Nicole!**
Happy Quilting!

Love your idea with the drawers, I roll mine and put them in pretty baskets that sit on my shelves.
I like that idea too. Fabric as a decoration!
I store mine folded in narrow baskets and it has worked well for me. The baskets sit in a cupboard with solid doors where my fabrics are protected from sunlight. My sewing room faces south and can be very bright even with blinds and curtains. I have purchased fabric rolled that way from several quilt shops….
All my fabric is stored in cabinets or drawers as well away from light. I am in a basement room, but there is a large south window in my room that still has a lot of sunlight.
I love your drawers. ๐ I never used to have a problem with storing fabric because I didn’t have that much – that has changed this last couple of years and it’s becoming a problem. I love the idea of baskets of rolled up fabric sorted by color. And I’d love a copy of that book. Thanks for sharing!
I love your method. I have my FQ in plastic bins, yardage folded on shelves and projects all over the place. Quilting has taken over my house!! I would love a copy of your book. Thank you for the chance to win.
Thanks for the ideas. I need to get organized like this. ๐ค๐
I love the idea of rolling and using the rubber bands.
I store fat quarters that way too!
I love this idea! Right now I fold and stack, but this would be much easier!
I love making scrap doll quilts. I try to organize mine by color and period but that doesn’t last for long!
I never thought of rolling the fabric. That would really work well for my fabric and available storage!
I love your ideas for fabric storage. I have a lot of fabric! I always love your patterns and fabric choices. I would love a copy of your book….what a treat that would be!!
Good organizing ideas
I’m rather disorganized with my fabric storage but that’s how I like it – creative disorder works for me :0) Your book looks lovely!
I love the drawers filled with fabric! Sad to say, mine isn’t tamed! I came over from your Instagram page.
I store my fabrics folded and stacked on shelves in a large cabinet, just waiting for me to sew them into quilts! Thanks for the nice giveaway!
I store mine in wire baskets so I can see whats what…and in plastic bins under a bed and in a corner of the room where light has a hard time peeking….this bed is covered with projects of many colors some in progress and some done just not put away….Thanks for a chance bobbie rumler of vail az
