Since my BOMs over the years have been wool applique projects and I have several wool applique patterns, I thought I would share some of my tips for wool applique. I will also be taking you through a kind of “mini class” over the next few weeks on wool applique. I want everyone to enjoy wool applique as much as I do!
Tip #1
Since my projects are wool applique on fabric, I like to stabilize my background by applying Fray Check to the edges.
This keeps the fabric background from fraying on the edges while it’s handled when you stitch. Some fabric can fray quite a lot when handled. This assures you don’t lose any fabric in the seam allowance.
Tip #2
Templates. For pattern templates that need to be used several times over for tracing, I reinforce them. I do this by either copying them directly onto card stock from the pattern or by gluing the template page to a piece of card stock and then cutting them out.
Once you have them cut out, you can write the number of shapes needed for the pattern and the color of wool on the template. Save them in a plastic bag attached to the pattern for future use!
Tip #3
Use the thread that will complement your project. I like to use Valdani Perle Cotton threads in size 8. I often use an array of neutrals from light to dark, depending on the color of my applique piece.
I like to store them in a plastic case I found at the local craft store. I can also keep the cover on and pull the thread from inside to protect my threads from a particularly curious cat!
These threads come in a large variety of colors and sizes. You may want to match the color of thread to each applique piece. You also might want to use a thicker or thinner thread than I use. Try different threads in colors and sizes until you get the look you like!
I recommend using a chenille needle, size 22 with these threads. This is the brand I use:
I like John James Chenille size 22 because of their length and the size of the eye. It’s easy to thread size 8 perle cotton with this size. Once again this is a personal preference. You may find another needle size that works better for you.
Tip #4
Even if you use fusible web to secure your applique pieces, it’s always a good idea to keep some fabric glue by your side in case a piece loosens while you are stitching. I use both the large size and a smaller size that I keep in my thread box.
Both of these are Roxanne Glue products that I have used for years and love. I love the small Dip & Dab because it fits anywhere.
Tip #5
My final tip is to always have very good lighting to stitch. If you want to make your stitches even in size and spacing, you can’t do that in the dark! I like to use a light with a magnifier so I can see up close. This is the desk model I use.

Thank you for such great tips once again! I most always use Valdani #12 thread, but I do own some #8. I like the tip about the Fray Check around the edges of the background fabric.

Love your tips! I use one of those plastic boxes for fishing lures for storing my Valdani and needles and a fancied-up Altoid box for the notions like scissors, needles, tweezers, etc. The Valdani can be wound onto a bobbin to fit in the box too. Good for travel.
That’s a great idea to wind the Valdani on a bobbin for travel. I’ll have to use that.

Thanks for all of the tips. I use a pharmacy medicine bottle that my husband drilled a hole in the top to put my thread in to make sure the kittens won’t be able to play with it too badly.
